A really good book with many thoughts to chew on. All truly great science fiction is allegory, positing a "big idea" that is the real centerpiece of the book. The story, characters, and dialogue only serve to flesh out that idea.

This book is exactly that, but the story itself is very good. The characters--especially Shevek--were great, the dialogue felt real (though a little alien, which was a nice touch), the setting was really interesting, the science was hard enough for nerds yet soft enough
