Read with the Science Fiction and Fantasy book club as the July 2009 book
Theme: literary Science Fiction
This was a hard book to rate. It was very difficult to read. In places, it seemed to drag on forever. (Like when they were traveling across the glacier..) But there were so many ideas brought up. And in many cases, they seemed to be just tossed out there, waiting for me to think about them. If I didn't read carefully, I might miss them.

Truly groundbreaking, in that the inhabitants of the planet Winter can become either male or female during a period of going into heat. The rest of the time, they do not display obvious gender characteristics. This sort of thing may seem old hat now, but in the '70's it was a definite stretch of the boundaries. There is also great descriptions of the Winter planet, the ice and cold.

This is one of the top 3 or so scifi books I have ever read. It had everything I want from a scifi book: politics, science, cultural message, adventure.
