3.5 stars. Solid, original debut novel. Well developed charactrers, intricate political plot and an excellent system of magic. I wasn't as sucked in to the narrative as I would have liked so can't quite give it four stars but their is no doubt that Sanderson is a talent to watch out for.

Brandon Sanderson’s first novel Elantris has the advantage of being a standalone book (for the moment, there have been talks of sequels). There’s something extra satisfying about getting the whole beginning and end of a story in one go.
Elantris was Sanderson’s first novel and it’s a very capable outing displaying most of the things that people generally enjoy about Brandon Sanderson’s writing.

Although they are nothing like Tolkien's works, Sanderson's books all give LOTR a run for the money in world-building. And I think Sanderson wins. Politics, economy, religion, magic, language, weather, intrigues, cities, wars, legends, scenery, clothing, food, customs, etc. They are all there. Once again, I was speechless as I finished his book. Sanderson is my new favorite author!
