My fiance made me read this book because he started reading Sanderson not too long ago. I was surprised how quickly I read through it. Elantris was fairly fast-paced and had a lot of mystery surrounding the ill-fated city. My only complaint with the book is that everything got wrapped up a little too neatly at the end, and the solution was a little too simplistic. Otherwise, it's a great fantasy read, especially if you don't want to commit a lot of time to a long series. I look forward to readin

I decided to try something out by Brandon Sanderson, who will be completing Robert Jordan's immense Wheel of Time epic. Elantris is his first book, and a stand alone, which is nice-- I'm sick of people thinking that fantasy can only be written in series with more than three books (but of course, the publishers want to make more money, and a series is the best way to do that, from what I hear). This is an incredible stand-alone fantasy novel. Elantris was once the home of near god-like people, with incredible powers. The inhabitants of Elantris were marked by their silver skin and white hair; people were not born this way but experienced a transformation (the Shaod) at a random time in their lives. Ten years before the start of the narration, something bad happened to the Elantrians. Their hair fell out, their skin became mottled gray, and their hearts stopped beating.

Nobody does despair like Sanderson. I started reading this book many years ago on an airplane and then left the book on the plane. Oops. Finally got around to listening to the audio version, and it was fantastic. The worlds he builds are always interesting and unique, and this one is no different. His characters are interesting, and the plot intriguing.

Awesome! Haven't been so drawn in to a book in a long time

Not perfect, but a wonderful debut novel. I got to meet the author recently and that always adds to the fun.
My gripes are small. I don't like fantasy that has weird, impossible-to-say names, and this one has some of that (although not all). At times it got a little cute, if you know what I mean. (think Eddings) But overall, it was so imaginative, so different from the rest. ...more

Sanderson's first book, and it's a winner! Truly enjoyed his ability to weave a story around so much intrigue.
