I almost listed this as a two star but the writing is too good to do that. Every book in this series left me feeling like was drugging through a desert in great need of water. I kept thinking I would finally get the water at the end, but no.
The characters are well written and the relationships for the most part are good. The romantic relationships are done well at all. And the only time any character can have something good happen for them it seems it must come at the expense of the lead charact ...more

2nd Read (2017) 3 Stars. This was still my least favorite book of the trilogy. Most trilogies have most of the travel portions in the first and second books while saving a lot of action until the finale. This series saved all of the boring journey for the end. The author did a good job making me care about the characters, but boy were they frustrating. Here are some of the things that annoyed me:

I became frustrated when reading this book. Poor character development lead to the abandonment of the primary character. I would surmise that most people reading fantasy are looking for complex character development, not the twisting and destruction of characters.

LOVE this trilogy! Hobb took this story in a totally unexpected direction in this book. I'm thrilled to realize there are several more books written in this world. Unforgettable characters and concepts.
