I wish they had half star options... I liked it a bit more than 3 stars, but not quite 4. :) The creepy, twisted versions of fairy tales are loads of fun, and the appendix that discusses the real origins of each was one of my favorite parts of the book. I liked the evolution of the main character from frightened, lonely, selfish child to responsible man, but not all of the horrors he faced spoke to me. Some did. And though his later life was not covered in depth, I still cried at the end.

I really liked this book. It's a fairytale for adults. Not that there are "adult" situations, but it's a fairytale like the original Grimm Brothers, so death and tragedy.
I found it, because I got the second book free. (Being a bookseller has some perks.) I do not regret having to purchase this one at all. ...more
