This is my first reading of any Robert Jordan book, and I found it merely adequate in comparison to my favorite authors. Jordan, at least in this first book, does not have the emotional power that Goodkind has; the weight of history and legend, the fullness of the world that Tolkien has; nor the high tension and last-minute plot twists that Martin has. I've owned this book for years but, partially because of the terrible cover art, could never bring myself to read it. I was pleasantly surprised however. It's a fairly traditional epic fantasy, with plenty of recognizable elements, but it is well-written and has a few more sophisticated elements that makes it a step above your average mass-market fantasy series. I read this years ago and remember being unimpressed. There was a lot of hype and nothing in the book led me to believe even a bit of it. The writing was simple at best, the characters unimpressive, and generally felt like a really basic fantasy series. I just never understood why it got the following it did.

This is my review of the whole series. I didn't start reading this series until all but the last book he released was published. It's eleven books long and the first 4-5 are great and by then you're too invested to stop reading when he piles on too much detail, you just want to say get on with it and tell us what happens.
