I'm glad I finally got a chance to finish the book. I started reading this about 17 years ago and then didn't get to finish. I don't recall why or what happened to my copy of the book.
I enjoyed this book as much as Oryx and Crake. Atwood is best at describing the aftermath of a society going horribly wrong. Had heard the title before, but never read it. Maybe something to recommend for my sci-fi reading group! We could do a section on dystopias (which this seems to be about).

I found this book simultaneously chilling and darkly fascinating. Like 1984, The Handmaid's Tale's strength lies in the parallels that can be drawn between today's society and the events in the book. It was a frightening and sobering experience to read this book, and it really made me think about my own life.
