Read several chapters and then abandoned this... it just didn't appeal to me, neither the writing nor the story. Maybe I'll try it again one day.

A mesmerizing and twisted tale of a matriarchal world where magic is powered with dark gems, and the darker your gem the more power you hold. A young girl is born with immense power and a group of people who have been waiting for her for the last 700 years are trying to protect and teach her while keeping her out of the hands of the crazy, evil women who currently rule.

I was caught taken back at the lack of explination through out this book. Yet the strong beginning which was rather violent caught my interest which was continued throught out by the further violence and sexuality that emerged in the book. By the end of this book which I couldnt put down I wsa completely entranced by the story and had to go get the following two books just to find out what happened. Ann Bishop is a great writer and develops the lands in which her stories reside incredibly well.

This trilogy is perhaps my favorite of everything I've read. Very dark fantasy, but Bishop creates a wonderfully complex and entralling world, and her characters are engaging. I didn't want to put these books down when I finished, and I routinely go back and read them again.

this is a very dark and adult series...wouldn't recommend it for the under 16 crowd. Very good and great character development. If you like the "bad boy" as the hero of the story, definately a good pick.
