Very fascinating book. It took me a while to get the flow of the story and about 400 pages to feel like I could put enough of the pieces together to fully understand what was going on. I realized half way through the book that though Gaiman is writing in third-person, we only know as much as Shadow knows. I found this slow unfolding of information a treat...like a piece of chocolate you meticulously ration off because you want it to last ever so much longer. Gaiman is also a master with language

I was trying to remember if I've read any other Gaiman novels. I don't think so. I read many Sandman issues long ago. At sometime, I got to feeling the Gaiman was too clever or mainstream for me. I tend to more like fantasies and fictions that take me very far away from anything current or "of this world". Gaiman always seemed too relevant for me, and with a title like "American Gods," I was reasonably nervous. But, _everyone_ seemed to _really_ love it, so...
