Garth Nix's Tales of the Old Kingdom are excellent, and the short story does justice to the rest of the series. He is a master of building tension and dread for the main character, Nicholas Sayre. His ability to describe realistic personalities is on point as ever. I heartily recommend "Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case".
