Susannah Clarke's epic Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norrell was a favorite in 2004, when I eagerly awaited more. Finally, I have my wish with this charming collection . Not all of the stories are set in the same universe as Jonathan Strange, but the authorial tone I enjoyed so much is back, as are a sprinkling of those delicious footnotes. Clarke has the amazing ability to make a story that you're reading for the first time seem like something you've always known, as if you had it told to you when yo

A nice bit to pass the time before her next book (which will hopefully be coming out in the not too distant future). The stories here, although not all specifically related to characters from Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, are quite similar in tone, style and quality.

i'm not inspired to say much for this review, which is awfully sad considering how much i enjoyed her other book. the stories involving characters from strange/norrell were the best, the rest, just ok. but one story - tom brightwind - was so tedious and odd that after 5 pages or so, i just skipped it. let's just say, i'm glad i got this one from the library.
