As always reading this books is a sheer joy and I will be honest the more I can convert to it the better.
The book is sheer fantasy set up to a back drop of historical events and framed with science fiction. Once you have negotiated that you are in for a roller coaster ride you really have no idea where it will take you.
One thing I will say is that even though the book takes time (and I will admit that finding the story suddenly being divided in to books surprised me) the story seems to shift ge ...more

I love this book, plain and simple. I am sure there are those out there who will shoot the plot, the characterisations, the ideas - full of holes and your welcome.
I first found this book when reading David Pringles Modern Fantasy (basically a top 100 with plot spoilers so beware) and was totally fascinated with it. when you get a list of characters and places they instantly make you think how on earth is the author going to pull this off - but he does and at such a pace. Like Silverlock this book makes you go back to read or reread other authors so you can follow this story. Powers uses the 19th century poets and some nicely obscure bits of British background.
I still prefer Power's 'The Drawing of the Dark' with the wonderful double meaning to the tittle and alternative history of the Turks at the gates of Vienna and beer as the source of civilization due to man's eternal search for a good high. ...more

A fantastic novel telling an epic story of magic, time travel and history. Tim Powers manages to create a smart story that uses time travel as a mechanism to propel the story in a (at least for me) totally unexpected ways.
As always Powers story left me wondering what parts were based on historical facts and what only happens in the book.

An amazing story, so vivid. I can picture the scenes so clearly it's as if I'm right there in the filthy old streets of London. This story has so many twists and unique details, such as tricky body shifting strategies and dirt being the thing that can kill sorcerers rather than guns or knives.
Review update: I have to say, in very short time, I remember almost nothing about this book except that it had a certain sort of extreme viciousness to it. A nasty clown. People hanging about in high windo ...more

The title and cover are somewhat deceiving. This is not a novel which is heavily focused on Egyptian mythology and culture (which is what drew me in), but rather a time travel tale set primarily in early 19th century England.
It's a good yarn, but not exactly what I expected! ...more

Time travel, Romani, evil clowns, hapless heroes, werewolves and wizards. All in one book! It's brilliant. Never a dull moment.
