4.0 stars. Piers Anthony is a MIND-NUMBING ENIGMA to me. He is capable of writing extremely thought-provoking, imaginative stories that are both original and speak to fundamental aspects of the human condition. The mystery is that he does so infrequently, despite being one of the most prolific authors in the speculative fiction. Wait....on second thought, maybe that is the answer. Quantity of production slamming right into the proverbial nuts of quality.

This is the first book in Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, and my first foray into his writing. The story is an interesting & satirical look at "Death" (as well as a glimpse into the other inarnations of Fate, Time, War and Nature); entertaining on a purely fantastical level, as well as thought-provoking, I enjoyed it quite a bit and imagine I will read the remainder of the series if given the opportunity. A very strong start to a series. I have to admit though that I did lose interest towards the ending of the book. Mr. Anthony appeared in my mindset to linger to create a larger size book than was necessary. I do believe though that the originality and unique story line is more than enough though to process further into the series.
I have always been a fan of Piers Anthony and I have read countless books written by him. With that said he has never been a strong finisher of a novel.
