Interesting book on the adventures of a man who has to take over deaths duties after he actually kills death.

I have an odd relationship with Piers Anthony's writing. I like a lot of his work, but I'm never sure what I'm going to get when picking up his book and dislike almost as much as I like. This is largely because he writes for very different audiences in different books. The Incarnations of Immortality, and primarily On a Pale Horse are one of the series that hits almost every note right. I was a much bigger fan of Piers Anthony as a teen; before his Xanth series started getting obviously ephebophilic. However, I do still think at least the first few books in his Incarnations of Immortality are worth reading.

This is the first book in Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, and my first foray into his writing. The story is an interesting & satirical look at "Death" (as well as a glimpse into the other inarnations of Fate, Time, War and Nature); entertaining on a purely fantastical level, as well as thought-provoking, I enjoyed it quite a bit and imagine I will read the remainder of the series if given the opportunity. (My other-half is a fan, so I imagine that opportunity will present itself!) ...more
