3.5 stars. Only fails to get 4.0 stars because of how much better the succeeding books are. A good first novel in one of the better vampire series ever. This is the one that forever redefined the image of the vampire.

Very original mythology, and a great story. She's verbose, though and it gets tedious and in the way of the story.
