I thought it was interesting how this novel seems to straddle the gap between "big concept" sci-fi of the 50's-80's (in which almost all the characters were basically interchangeable and the point of the story was to consider how the world would be changed by whatever the author thought was interesting) and the more character-driven sci-fi that has evolved since.
