I was working at B. Dalton when the second book in the series came out. My boss was so excited by the first book that when the second one came out she tried to get everyone in the store to read the first one. So, although I didn't 'discover' the books on my own I still feel that I got in on them before they gained mass appeal. I'm re reading the Harry Potter series. The first book in the series really has brought home that the prose style changed from that of a preteen to a young adult.
JK Rowling really has combined the best style of Dickens and the Bronte sisters. Why? Harry Potter is reluctantly boarded by resentful relatives. His life changes when he learns that he is gifted at wizardry.
He also finds out that that he has a powerful enemy in Lord Voldemort. What is worse? Some of his servants may be at Harry's board ...more
