This book is, of course, the big payoff. Ursula K. LeGuin pointed out a while back that Gollum is Frodo's shadow self in The Lord of the Rings, and so it is only natural that when Frodo breaks down and tries to keep the ring, Gollum inadvertently does the right thing and destroys it. Aragorn becomes the rightful King in the human world, and the Fairies decide to fade away - for every positive, there is a negative.
