The Lord of the Rings is, of course, one of the great fantasy classics, and Fellowship is the book that starts it all off. There's a lot of detail about the Shire, and about the contrast between the adventurous Bilbo Baggins and the more quiet Frodo, who never asked to leave home. Gandalf is an old friend if you've read The Hobbit. It's a pretty straight road compared to the twisty turns of the next two books, and a great read.
