5.0 stars. I just re-read this book as it has been a LONG time since I first read it and was curious about how well it would hold up over time. The answer is... AMAZINGLY WELL. I was actually a bit surprised at just how good this book is as it is very easy to be disappointed when you read the "consensus" standard of any genre. Well this series not only IS the standard, but it DESERVES to be the standard of epic fantasy. I am looking forward to re-reading the next two books in the trilogy.

The pic cover shown is not from the "Fellowship" of this edition but for "The Return of the King" cover. This was the hardcover edition I checked out of the library and read over 40 years ago. I had the paperback editions, but these hardcovers had amazing fold out maps and jewel-like foil embossed covers that made me feel I was handling an ancient tome out of the library at Rivendell. I LOVE this audiobook version!! The reader does a great job capturing the characters' personalities! I hadn't read this book in a long time! So glad that I got to experience it again!

The start of the greatest fantasy series ever written. Wonderful characters in a world with depth and reality that goes back ages of the world.
Read it about... oh, 8 years ago. Nothing that blew my mind, but I quite enjoyed it.
