I didn't read this until I graduated from college. I thought fantasy was silly, hard sf only for me. I was desperate for a beach book and my reading life was changed forever. I can't count the number of times I have reread this story. I've read it to my kids and they love it too.

Before the Lord of the Rings, of course, there was The Hobbit. And the nasty dragon. And all of the dwarves. I was actually lucky enough to see the animated version of this when I was young - it's quite captivating, so if you haven't seen it, give it a chance, you may very well like it. This is the book that got me hooked on fantasy books, and the world that tolkien created. Everyone knows the story of the Hobbit and if they dont they need to stop living in a cave. This is a book that you must read before you die.
Come on Peter Jackson you need to make this one a movie to!
