This is another tale of vacations gone awry. Bilbo Baggins is a wealthy hobbit who hires Gandalf Travel to take him on a grand tour of Middle Earth.
But Gandalf plays a little bait-and-switch on Bilbo, and our hero soon discovers that it will not be Gandalf leading the tour, but a cadre of fat, venal and mentally challenged Dwarves. Even worse, he is expected to do most of the work himself. Though he finds the experience trying, Bilbo discovers hidden reserves of talent, bravery and pluck.

So I read and loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was supposed to as a late teenager, but I never had read and loved the Hobbit when I was supposed to before that. I never got around to reading afterwards either, although at the end of the trilogy I was missing the world immensely. I wish i had now, because this dramatization (which was the only audio version my local branch had available when I was setting off on a trip) was probably not the way to go. I read this and all of the Lord of the Rings books in Junior High, and was amazed by the scope of Tolkein's world. He had such a fantastic imagination. This is the kid's book that will hook you into the series.
