2014 Re-read.

This middle book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the most disjointed of the three, with the fellowship scattered to the four winds. I recall feeling especially odd when reading this for the first time because Frodo and Sam were separated from Merry and Pippin (now with the Ents) and thus, at least two major storylines were created. At the end of the book, the reader is left with a bit of a mess, to say the least. But the Ents are a wonderful creation, and every trilogy needs a bridge.
