didn't like this as much as the golden compass. took too long to really get going and then there wasn't enough development for me. the characters weren't terrifically likeable, and yet weren't treated in a way that i felt i was supposed to dislike them. i'm still interested to see where the series wraps up, but i don't feel like this book delivered on the promise and interest of the first.

As with Lirael by Garth Nix, I was instantly frustrated after picking up this book directly after reading The Golden Compass to have it begin with another character that I wasn't familiar with. Lyra did return, however, and it ended up being, possibly, the best of the trilogy.

although slightly less interesting than book 1, this is still an excellent continuation of the series. weaves our world and book 1's together, laying the groundwork for book 3. very enjoyable and definitely ends in such a way that book 3 must be procured immediately!
