Unbelievably great, mindbending, hard sci-fi. Niven follows through scientifically on all sorts of outlandish ideas, and creates a very complete, workable view of the universe (he has a whole series of books based in the "Known Space" universe he has created; some are linked and some aren't) and one particularly weird story within it.
