4.0 to 4.5 stars. An excellent follow up to Old Man's War. I think both the story and the writing improved from the first novel (which I also liked very much). Recommended.

This morning I finished listening to the audio version of The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi. I'm a huge Scalzi fan and the first book of this series Old Man's War was quite possibly one of the most enjoyable sci-fi books I've ever read. Though I didn't much care for the naration (good naration, I think, is damn hard to do) the book was awesome. Scalzi's creative genius, humor, and expertise in geek lore mix together for a great story. Favorite quote:

I expected the series to continue with Perry, so it took me a little while to realize he wasn't going to eventually just walk in the room. That ended up being ok because I really enjoyed the protagonist and thought it did a great job telling an interesting story. Most authors create a protagonist that the reader is going to root for, and I generally feel like that is what Scalzi is doing. While this was all in all a fairly good book, I'd have to say it wasn't as good as the first. Of course that seems to be the way with most series for me, but this one stood out a little more as being below par for what was accomplished in the first book. It was still an entertaining story and still worth the read if only to keep on the events of the series. I just didn't find any connection with the characters like I did in Old Man's War. Thankfully, it appears the orignial main character will b

Even better than Old Man's War. Less with the self-insertion, more with the exploration of themes like choice and cloning and slavery. Plus a thrilling plot. Plus giggles. I loved it. Loved it.

A wonderful action story that also explores the question - what makes a man human. This is Jared Dirac's story. When he is first activated, they try to impress another man's conciousness into his brain, but it doesn't work.
As Jared gains more experience , some of the other man's memories come back.
The other man is a traitor to humanity named Charles Boutlton. The memories that first come back are memories of Boulton's daughter, Zoe (who has a tale of her own).
