Old Man's War is a highly creative and enjoyable novel by John Scalzi. Earth in the future has colonized many planets but is at war with many alien species as well. The Colonial Defense Forces (CDF), with responsibility of protecting Earth and its colonies, is always looking for new recruits. The twist is that they must be at least 75 yrs old. what a read! although i cant say that this was a five-star novel, this was definitely a solid four--if not a 4.5. there's very little that i could gripe about, but i cant honestly say that this is something "novel" or monumental. but it is a VERY fun read.

the title alone is the premise of the book, and is summarized in the very first sentence. an old man of seventy-five years enters the army on his 75th birthday. where the story goes from there is fast-paced and exciting. you can probably read

The tone of "Old Man's War" reminds me a bit of "Starship Troopers", but it is light years more inventive. Lots of great entertainment all around. ...more

Written very much in Heinlein's style, it starts strong, has an interesting viewpoints, and the ending -- while not as strong as the beginning or middle -- is nicely done.

Not a great book, it is nonetheless a pleasant read, and I recommend it for all you Heinlien buffs.
