2.5 to 3.0 stars. Let me begin this review by saying that I think I’m becoming much harder to please when it comes to fantasy stories so please keep that in mind. Having read quite a few, the standard fantasy plot elements just don’t produce the same warm and fuzzy feeling that I used to experience when reading these kinds of stories. I really liked this book. The world building was facinating and the characters are enjoyable. I would like to run into Janco or Ari in real life. I did not even mind the formulatic feel at the end. To be honest Yelana was strong without being willful, interesting without being overbearing. Valek was strong with a hidden charitable streak. I really liked this book! I was hooked right away! The story line was very interesting to me! I really am glad we picked this as a book of the month!
This novel was excellent and completely unexpected. Each time I thought I had gotten all of the little plots unraveled I was wrong. This book was absolutley delicious and I can't wait to gobble up some more of this wonderful series. Yelena is a wonderful heroine with real fears, who makes believable mistakes. This story goes at a fleet pace with wonderful detailing for the plot and the characters.

Wow. What a great read. It's so refreshing to be able to read a fantasy novel and have no idea what is going to happen. And the protagonist is smart and easy to like. Love this book!
