I'm not sure what it is about this book exactly that made me LOVE it but I read it in four hours and my heart was fluttering in my chest to reach the finale. It felt so natural to enter Katniss' reality... I could taste the musky remnants of coal as it fought its way to the surface of the mine shaft. I could feel the gaunt tug of hunger in my ribs as Katniss watched the boy with the bread with invisible eyes. I could literally experience the rush of adrenaline when Prim's name was announced and I'm not sure what it is about this book exactly that made me LOVE it but I read it in four hours and my heart was fluttering in my chest to reach the finale. It felt so natural to enter Katniss' reality... I could taste the musky remnants of coal as it fought its way to the surface of the mine shaft. I could feel the gaunt tug of hunger in my ribs as Katniss watched the boy with the bread with invisible eyes. I could literally experience the rush of adrenaline when Prim's name was announced and the sense of betrayal as Katiniss' right foot stepped forward to accept a sentence of certain death to preserve her sister's innocence. I never felt like I had to fake an emotion to go where the author wanted me to go. The relationships were complex but in a way where they were not trying to be... it wasn't forced upon you. I love books that show human nature for what it truly is... at times it is about survival and suffering, at others about beauty and sacrifice and at times it is about both simultaneously. A person can be entirely brave while at the same time a coward that is caged in by self-proclaimed weaknesses. The world... people...life is a paradox. This book made me cringe at times at my own humanity... questioning how I would react... knowing that in my heart without the grace of God, at my core, I have no good in me. Despite this, the book proves that within humanity also lies the shadow of greatness... sacrificial love, bravery, the stirring of justice and it reminds me that in every human lies the possibility of redemption.

Alright, enough blabbing on subjects I am not nearly qualified to speak on. I would highly recommend this book to people of all ages. Allow this book to speak to you and be willing to absorb a story that is frighteningly close to a reality that seems at hand in the present age but far enough to allow you to read it without being too critical. I would also like if you would comment on my new group The Labyrinth about the Hunger Games because I love discussing a new book!!! ...more
