Ich hatte eine Romantasy mit einem Rivals-to-Lovers Trope erwartet und mich auf eine
magische Welt und richtig gute Wortgefechte und schlaue Tricks der Rivalen mit einem
Slowburn gefreut, bei dem ich schön mitfiebern kann.

Bekommen habe ich eine unausgearbeitete Welt in der die Magie sich auf halbwegs
magische Häuser und miteinander korrespondierende Schreibmaschinen beschränkt.

In Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross we follow two young people Iris Willow and Roman C. Kitt. While Iris grew up in the lower class in the city of Oath, and had to quit school after her brother Forest left to fight in the war of the gods Enva and Dacre, so she could afford life for her and her mother, Roman Kitt was born into the upper class and new money.
We learn that the both of them met while working for the Gazette, one of Oath‘s biggest newspapers. They both try to get the position of columnis

When Kitt gets the promotion and Iris‘ life falls apart, she decides to pack up and leave Oath to report from the war front.

The book is a story about two young people that haven’t found their place in their world yet. A story about what it means to trust others and how to love. A story about a war that isn’t their own and still, they have to live with it. A story about magic and the powers of words and the emotions they bring. A story about how in war, tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so you have to seize the day.

Rebecca Ross creates a world that isn’t unlike ours just a few decades ago. Just with vengeful gods and magic, that is incorporated into everyday life.
Altough there isn’t much world building you still somehow get a sense of Oath and the Front. And sometimes it doesn’t need a lot of world building to get a story across.

While the story drags on in the beginning, we do learn some important facts about the motivations for both Iris and Roman. We learn how moved Roman is by Iris words and spirit and how much he still blames himself for his sister’s death and doesn’t deserve anything good. We also learn how much Iris suffers by her brothers absence and her mothers alcoholism.
Once Iris reaches Avalon Bluff, the story does pick up in pace and story telling.
All in all this book was enjoyable for people that like a love story more than good world building and don’t want to be overwhelmed.

I did like the book and will read the second one as well. The main characters are lovely and I’m excited what’s to come next for them.

Fantasy is definitely not the main focus here, but rather a framework for the enemy's to lovers plot.
I liked the world building a lot, I could easily see the individual scenes in my mind’s eye which is always a good sign. I really grew fond of the characters, so much that I could easily overlook some of their nonsensical actions ('oh yeah, I definitely have to tend the garden, before war starts tomorrow') 😄 Moreover I really liked the little plot twist at the end.
