I was in Prague once. Sadly for me, I only remember ONE THING about my trip there: The fact that they offered ghost tours through the city. (Because, how cool is that?)
Guess what was mentioned in the very first chapter of this book: the freaking ghost tours. Felt like a hero when I read that. (*I was there!*)

Finally again a book that after my high expectations has fulfilled and even excelled them and all I can say is, that I love this book! After many positive reviews and because I found the cover pretty amazing, I was really looking forward to read this book and honestly, I feared that I’ll be disappointed like so often, when I’ve high expectations. Meine Meinung:
Ich habe dieses Buch bisher "nur" zweimal auf Deutsch gelesen und das vor einigen Jahren. Da es zu einem meiner Lieblingsbücher gehört, dachte ich, dass ich es mir auch ein drittes Mal gönnen kann. Dieses Mal dann aber auf Englisch. Dass ich ein Buch mehrmals lese, das gleicht eigentlich einem Wunder. Warum ich dieses Buch gleich dreimal gelesen habe, das erläutere ich in dieser Rezension.

where to start?! first of all I had some trouble getting into the story and that world. additional to that I couldnt connect with karou at all. sometimes I imagined here as a little child and sometimes as an adult, she didnt work as a 17-year-old for me at all.
when it finally started to get a bit more interesting that second storyline started and first I found it confusing but still kinda interesting. for the last 100 pages or so laini taylor totally lost me. I found that long part about madriga ...more

'why the hype' i wonder whenever i hear people praise this book to the skies. i don't get it.
first off, there's the strange writing style, the strange sentence arrangement. hell, how many commas does a book need? and the overdone prose? i got lost in vanities and pointless pictorial language. usually i love lyrical writing, but this was too much. way too much. it slowed me down and spoiled all the fun that might have been in the story. it's like reading a maggie-stiefvater-wannabe - and not in a 'why the hype' i wonder whenever i hear people praise this book to the skies. i don't get it.

'Karou was, simply, lovely. She moves like a poem and smiles like a Sphinx.' can someone tell me what's 'she moves like a poem' supposed to mean? and 'karou was, simply, lovely'? why someone needs to beef up a four-word-sentence with two commas?
yeah, the writing style sucked most of the time, and - more often than not - the prose made no sense at all.

despite the strange writing i thought i could like this book. i mean, prague *___* it's, along with dublin, my favorite town. i spent so much time on charles bridge watching puppeteer and artists and painters, i ate goulash and drank freshly brewed beer in small and not so small pubs, i strolled up and down narrow alleys and side streets, i enjoyed the vivid hustle and bustle of hundreds of rambling tourists and locals. prague is awesome. and this book was prague.
next up, we have some great protagonists. zuzana, an amazing secondary character. i loved her from the jump. all the same with brimstone and issa. i even liked karou, but i couldn't connect with her.

but the promising beginning lead me up the garden path.
firstly, kazimirgate - so irrelevant, even though it was fun to read about karou's revenge :D
secondly, karou is lonley, karou wants to be loved. thanks, i got it. i don't need to read it over and over again. reiterating this is annoying and makes karou whiney and weak, when she is anything but.
thirdly, the love interest, akiva. i had hope for the story til akiva showed up. i can't put into words why i didn't like him. maybe it was because of his voice. i didn't like his pov.

at this point the book lost most of its appeal to me, but clung on hope and willed me to read on. alas it went from bad to worse, with a flashback in karou's and akiva's past. this flashback took most of the second half of the book. that alone is bad enough. to top it all off, the whole flashback part was so not interesting and it dragged on and on and on and on -.- it could've been told in one single chapter...
plus, the romance was too, idk, normal. too clichéd. a had hoped for more than ~plain star-crossed lovers.

the ending, however, was terrific. i loved the last pages, the last twist, the no-hea. i loved that there was no cliffhanger. i loved some of the stylistic devices, like mini-chapters and the poems between the book parts.
i don't know if i want to read the next book, but i think i will, after all i want to know what's with brimstone and the others.

3 stars... for prague, for the ending, for brimstone, for zuzana, for the great moments the book had, for the promising (even though wasted) plot, and for teeth ^^ ...more

Inhalt:
Abgesehen von ihrer seltsamen "Familie" führt Karou ein ganz normales Leben. Sie studiert Kunst in Prag, lebt in einer kleinen Wohnung und geht am liebsten mit ihrer besten Freundin Zuzana in ihrer Stammkneipe, der Giftküche, Gulasch essen. Doch ihre Familie besteht aus vier Chimären, Mischwesen aus Mensch und Tier, die in einem Laden wohnt, dessen Tür einen überallhin führen kann. Für Brimstone, dem Besitzer des Ladens, führt Karou ungewöhnliche Aufträge aus. Durch die Tür des Ladens reist sie in die verschiedensten Städte und besorgt für ihn alle möglichen Zähne, auch wenn sie nicht weiß, was Brimstone mit diesen anfangen möchte. Als Währung bekommt sie von ihm Wünsche, die sie schon öfters für so banale Sachen wie blaue Haare oder einem Ausschlag bei ihrem unerträglichen Ex-Freund ausgegeben hat. Insgesamt ist Karou zufrieden mit ihrem Leben, bis eines Tages der Engel Akiva auftaucht und ihre Welt und ihre Ansichten ins Wanken bringt.

Meine Meinung:
Der erste Teil "Zwischen den Welten" der "Daughter of Smoke and Bones"-Reihe von Laini Taylor ist mal wieder ein Buch, dass ich in einem Satz zusammenfassen könnte: WOW! Natürlich möchte ich es dabei nicht belassen, sondern meine Meinung noch ein bisschen näher erläutern, auch wenn es schon ein paar Tage her ist, dass ich das Buch ausgelesen habe.

Geschrieben ist es in der Er-/Sie-Perspektive, die zwischen Karou und Akiva wechselt. Dabei ist Karous Sichtweise relativ unwissend, was die Hintergründe der Chimären und besonders Brimstones Handwerk angeht, da sie ja auch nur vier Chimären kennt und sich in ihrer Welt nicht über Brimstones Laden hinweg bewegt hat. Auf diese Weise konnte ich gut miträtseln, was es denn mit dem ganzen Geheimnis um ihn, den Zähnen und den Wünschen auf sich hat. Auch Karous Zuneigung zu den vier Chimären, bei denen sie aufgewachsen ist und die sie als ihre Familie ansieht, konnte ich gut nachvollziehen.

Bei Akivas Erzählungen tappt man anfangs auch ziemlich im Dunkeln und merkt nur, wie verbittert er ist, aber nicht warum. Man erfährt zwar zwischendurch immer mal wieder, dass es etwas Schlimmes in seiner Vergangenheit stattgefunden hat, doch dies wird erst gegen Ende hin aufgedeckt. Durch diese beiden unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen war die Geschichte für mich kaum vorhersehbar und bot viele überraschende Wendungen, so dass ich das Buch eigentlich gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen wollte.

Auch wenn es in diesem Buch auch wieder eine Liebesgeschichte gibt, hebt sich "Daughter of Smoke and Bone - Zwischen den Welten" von anderen Jugendbüchern ab. Die Geschichte ist einfach mal was anderes, vor allem auch, weil die Welt nicht in Schwarz und Weiß aufgeteilt ist. Hier ist nicht klar zu erkennen, wer jetzt die Guten und wer die Bösen sind, was ich sehr positiv finde. Karou wirkt zwar auf den ersten Blick wie die Gute und Akiva wie der Böse, wie es in anderen Liebesgeschichten ja oft zu finden ist, doch beim Lesen habe ich mich immer öfter daran gezweifelt. Je mehr von der Vergangenheit aufgedeckt wurde, desto mehr musste ich meine Sichtweise nochmal überdenken, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat.

Fazit:
"Zwischen den Welten" ist ein toller erster Teil von Laini Taylors "Daughter of Smoke and Bone"-Reihe, der sich für mich deutlich von anderen Jugendbüchern abhebt. Wer dieses ständige Schwarz-Weiß-Schema Leid ist und lieber mal ein paar Grautöne dazwischen hat, sollte sich diesem Buch widmen. Durch die vielen Rückblicke in die Vergangenheit der Hauptpersonen hat mich die Geschichte immer wieder überraschen können und auch am Ende den Titel verständlich gemacht.
