What Members Thought

Okay, I finally finished this book. It was probably one of the hardest books I've read in a long time but not because of the medical terminology or because I thought it was monotonous. It was far from monotonous and I didn't have any trouble understanding the medical stuff. It was the subject matter. Alzheimer's Disease is an ugly unforgiving disease and I think we all know that but until I read this book and actually put myself in Alice's shoes and tried to put my husband in John's place, I rea

Unique. Frightening. Informative. Inspiring. Memorable. Real.
All of these are words I would use to describe Still Alice by Lisa Genova. It is a book I will definitely be recommending to friends and family. It is a book that moved me to tears. Alice Howland is a character I won't soon forget.

When I first picked up this book at the store to read the jacket, my first thought was "I don't know if I want to read something that will be so sad." I am so glad that I didn't listen to that first thought.
Still Alice gives us a look into the world of Alzheimer's from Alice's point of view - an intelligent woman who is trying to figure out how to deal with her mind. How many of us know someone with this disease? Do you treat them differently after you have learned? Once you read this book, you ...more

I've read all of Lisa Genova's books and all I can say is no one knows how to create personal realistic stories based on life issues and get deep inside the character's mind in the same way. The character Alice is a professor who takes charge of her early onset Alzheimer's and does not shy away from the asking the tough questions. Such a brilliant and heart wrenching brave book.

For fans of Jodi Picoult for sure. A thoughtful fictional story of early onset Alzheimers with deep characters and lots of opportunities for discussion. One for the bookclubs! Can't wait to see the movie.

Brilliant and emotional. So good and heartbreaking that there was a time I had to take a break and couldn't read on.
I like the way it was written in Alice's perspective.
The novel also describes important aspects/challenges of the character having this early-onset disease, such as shame, disability, people's reactions, etc .
I've newfound empathy and compassion for people suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.
