So this book was not what I expected. Everyone was talking about how emotional and deep it was, and it has tags like 'abuse' and 'dark', that made me think maybe it wasnt my kind of book. Those things kind of turn me off. But I decided to try it anyway because everyone was raving, and I am glad I did.

There are definitely some heavy issues addressed in this book, but it is not dark over all. It is very sweet and romantic, and at times even funny. Sure, I cried my eyes out at a few places, but it

2 1/2 Stars.

I probably would've liked Making Faces better if Fern had even a shred of self esteem. It was written very well, I just could not connect with the characters at all. Ambrose was too worried about his appearance, he doesn't even decide to give Fern a chance until high school is over and he has been in the army for 2 years. The character I was most annoyed with was Rita. Staying with a man that beats you just because you gave birth to his child? Come on.

Making Faces is one of those books that just gets to you. It's a story about a boy, a girl, a friend(s), a community, a country. It's a story about love, hate, dispair, hope, being contained and being let go.

Making Faces made me FEEL. It made me think about these people and what they were going through. I can honestly say that I cried. A lot. And it was sad tears, but it was good tears. And in the end, I continued to cry, because I was happy.

Maybe this book is about contradictions. But whatever

If I could give this book more than five stars, I totally would. Goodreads recommended this book based on several of my Bookshelves and I thought, "Wow, Goodreads really wants me to read this book." So I clicked on it and was skeptical of the nearly five star rating. So many rave reviews. I figured I better check it out. I can't thank Goodreads enough. I LOVED this book. I cried my eyeballs out and I don't cry for much. I can't say enough good things about this book. I also tend to not like the ...more
