First comes the first great book that starts it all, the Hunger Games. I absolutely loved the book to no extent and loved the plot to death. Katniss's character helped the story immensely, though. She is a strong leader who stays strong in times when it is needed and is seen by her community as a leader who will not stop fighting until her people are safe. The drama between Peeta and Katniss was not too overwhelming and made for a great plot structure. I would definently rate this book a ten out of five stars.
After the big Hunger Game phenomenon, came Catching Fire. This was one of favorites yet again. Katniss's qualities of being seen as a strong, hopeful leader are shown through her actions in wanting to protect her people whatever the cost. The love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale is still strong and not too worn out. The added characters even add to the great, thought out plot. The charming Finnick Odair, and intelligent Beetee come together to support Katniss in her role as a leader for all of Panem.
Now the last and final book came out, Mockingjay. Let me just say that this was the worst book that I have read in the series. Katniss who was once seen as a strong leader, who was seen as someone brave and caring, is now an unstable being who can't handle the slightest conflict without the use of drugs shot into her arm. She is not seen as a leader to me, but rather someone who is weak and depressed. The ending was especially depressing for me because of where everybody eventually was "sent" off to.This whole book was about depression and desperation. How could the first two books go from the theme of hope and courage, to depression and desperation? First off, Collins, in my opinion, stressed the whole war theme on way too far. We get that war is supposed to be awful and cause many casualties, but do you have to kill off everybody (not literally:D) that we love (sorta)?! The love triangle NOW has become too in depth and Katniss can not decide who she really loves. The only reason I finished reading this book was because (1.) I can't just quitting a book and (2.) because I wanted to see what would happen even if it pained me to do so. This book was a big disappointment for me from reading the first two books and I wished that the last book lived up to its expectations from the first two and ended in a subtle ending. ...more
