vampires versus witches

This was an okay start for a series. It’s a world that had humans, shifters, witches and vampires. There was a backstory which was slowly being unveiled as this particular plot unfolded.
I liked that Isolde was bold, independent and a warrior. But I also felt like her strength came from a place of privilege so it wasn’t necessarily strength from her character but strength from her position as princess and only child to the King.

A fantastic PNR.
First 25% was kinda flat & mostly background. In my view, not really needed. :)
BUT after that, the story really took off, lots of action, bad guys, good guys, riddles, witchcraft, sizzle & chemistry. Intense. Both Isolde & the King were perfect, not just from a romance perspective but also as they led their people - brave, strategic, smart. The King was the standout for me. BBF. Recommend.

First book review of the autumn season! Well, kinda. I started reading this before I really had that in mind but it works. What makes this a spooky read? It has lots of vampires and witches!
Isolde is the princess of a kingdom that is on the verge of war. Who is threatening her home? The Blood King, Adrian. She has a chance meeting with him in the woods without knowing who he is and has a visceral reaction to him. Later that evening she meets him again as the Blood King and he has a proposal for First book review of the autumn season! Well, kinda. Isolde is the princess of a kingdom that is on the verge of war. Who is threatening her home? The Blood King, Adrian. She has a chance meeting with him in the woods without knowing who he is and has a visceral reaction to him. Later that evening she meets him again as the Blood King and he has a proposal for peace between the two kingdoms that leaves everyone in shock – he wants to take Isolde as a wife and in exchange, he will protect her kingdom and people as his own. Against her better judgement but to save all that she loves, she agrees.
They then travel to Adrian’s kingdom of Revekka in the north with a strange red sky, filled with vampires and other monstrous creatures. But are vampires really the monsters she was raised to believe they are? Witches were evil and brought down kingdoms, didn’t they? And the witches were all burned… they no longer exist, right? But things are starting to happen that make her question everything she thought to be true. Most disturbing of all is her husband, who she swore to kill, is bringing out feelings that she cannot admit to.
Out of five stars, I’d give this one 3.5 stars. I liked our heroine because she wasn’t a weak pushover, but sometimes did things so rash, I guess to prove she wasn’t a pushover, that people she only suspected of not being the best wind up decapitated. A little bit of an overreaction, I think. And her continued denial of her feelings and poor treatment of her husband who clearly worships the ground she walks on, made me want to smack her upside the head. And it was pretty spicey, which I don’t mind but I mention it because some like it and some don’t. And it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. I looked it up and she did write a second and final book for this. However, I’m not going to read it because it just didn’t grip me like some books do. It was entertaining though, good, strong plot and a nice sprinkling of spice.
