I had such high expectations for this and was immediately drawn into the world, however, I was disappointed with the execution. I had issues with the pacing, info-dumps and the antagonist's motivations didn't feel strong enough.
I think I would have loved this more if the book had been condensed and if we'd experienced everything from Kallina's perspective - and I might ship her with her brother's love interest.... ...more

A book that lured me in and slowly seduced me with its intricate world building and immersive storyline. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book.
City of Lies started off really slow for me. I struggled to get into the first few chapters, but by the time I got about 100 pages in, I was well and truly hooked. I felt that this book took a really unique perspective on the notion of overthrowing a kingdom - something which has been done about a thousand times in numerous fantasy novels.
It's a book that's much less focused on external affairs, and more focused on internal affairs. It is also focused ...more
