I was really impressed with this author’s writing style. I would describe this book more as a slow paced read but it doesn’t feel like it’s dragging on or taking forever to get to the main point.
Pearl S. Buck made me feel immersed in the time frame, the characters’ surroundings, and economic status. Whenever the main protagonist was doing well financially I felt it and when they were living in complete poverty I that too. That is something I don’t think I ever felt from a book.

I read this the Kansas Humanities Council, but remember seeing it when I worked in a small town library. I really enjoyed this book, and there were times I really liked Wang Lung and sometimes I really didn't care for him very much. O-Lan was a woman I really respected, and seeing her through his eyes with the tenderness yet not the love was heartbreaking. This was a journey that I enjoyed reading.
