I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting much from this book, mostly because this isn’t the type of thing I usually read. I’ve avoided books with similar themes in the past because many of them seem to be, for lack of a better term, emotionally manipulative. There are certain settings in history that I find are often used as an easy way to evoke emotion. I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing, but it does annoy me when it appears to be a cheap way to add depth to a novel.

This is the first book featured in my book lover's calendar, and it's unlike anything I have ever read before, except perhaps in school. I thought it was good, and I'm looking forward to watching the film. I enjoyed reading about Lily's story, and the women she ended up staying with. I didn't like her father, and was so sure that he had done what Lily thought he did. Lily runs away from her abusive father, who treats her as such because she is the spitting image of her mother, who also left him.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found the insight and character development fantastic. Each one of the ladies in this book I'd love to sit down with and have a conversation with. It was one of those books I didn't want to put down once I got started. This is a coming of age story of a 14 year old girl in the late 60's who is dealing with an abusive father, civil rights issues in the South and figuring out the mystery of how her mother died 10 years ago.
