The author was stricken with a mysterious auto-immune illness that attacked her brain. Though she has very little recollection of the time that she was severely ill, she has used her skills as a journalist to recreate this period of her life. Reading about her descent into an illness that a lot of people thought was a mental disorder is both horrible and fascinating. It's like when you see an accident and cannot look away. A journalist's story of her ordeal with a rare autoimmune disorder that caused symptoms resembling serious mental illness. The medical aspects of the book are interesting. The story illuminates how fragile our health and wellness are, and how the medical care and diagnosis we receive is dependent on landing in the right hospital or doctor's office.

I took an unusually long time to get through this book. Normally I love reading memoirs and novels on mental illness, especially when it's a personal account, but there was a lot of science in this that made me less interested at times. Still, it was a unique take on someone starting out "normal" and going downhill from there and ending up in a mental institution and making a full recovery eventually. Interesting side note: In all the total cost of her treatment totaled to at least $1 million. C
