This is a fantastic book, but I had to return it to the library before finishing because it had holds on it. The telling of individual lives and why people chose to abandon the South for the unknown of the North and West is truly captivating. Highly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in better understanding one of the greatest migrations of human beings in United States history.

A thoroughly researched and engaging history of the great migration of Black Americans from the south to the north in the first half of the twentieth century. This history is told from the perspectives of three different people from different areas of the south whose stories exemplify the experiences of many Black Americans who made similar journeys.
