This is a book I have heard so much about, so I probably had large expectations for it. I enjoyed the writing, and it was a good story. However, I never really connected to any of the characters. Tom is an abusive jerk. Daisy wants her daughter to be a fool. I doubt Daisy would think that she is a fool, but that is what she is. Jordan really didn't add anything to the story. Nick is the only person to really "grow" from any life experiences. Gatsby is probably the most interesting character and ...more

Perhaps I was too young to truly appreciate this book when I read it in high school. But I did not enjoy the plot, the characters, or the writing style. I just couldn't connect with the characters nor undestand their motives or their decisions. Perhaps now that I have a larger experience base I can better relate to the book, but I just don't know if I can make myself give The Great Gatsby another try. (First Read in 1999.) ...more

I read this when I was in high school, and decided to read it again. And I'm glad I did. Not only did I not remember a lot of the story, but as I was reading it I realized that I have a much greater appreciation for the story now that I'm older. There's only so much a 15 year old can understand about love, loss, wealth, dreams, longing, failure, etc. It was definitely a more meaningful read at this point in my life. ...more

2/23/13: Still good the third time.

11/29/11: LOVED this the second time around. It helps when you don't skim or skip around.

I read this back in high school, so I want to read it again in the next year. I think it would be more enjoyable to read now!

It was ok. There seemed to be an overabundance of superfluous language. I feel this way about many of the "classics".

I guess the point is that The Grass isn't always Greener on the other Side. or Don't judge a book by its cover.
