What Members Thought

I didn't know what to expect from this book, I didn't even read the blurb. I had heard good things about it and I had just finished "The Messenger" by Zusak and that was full 5 stars of great - so I new this would be good. And I was right!. I really thought it was a great story of life and love amongst one of the worlds most horrible times. Zusak is great with evoking sentiment without sentmentality it is a gift.

This book is written in a style unlike any other book I have ever read. For the first 30 pages I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. At that point I got used to the unusual style and began to really enjoy the story. I found myself rooting for a happier ending, but when you are dealing with a book told from the point of view of death and written during WWII you can really hope for a non tragic ending.

The author does an excellent job using death as the narrator to build up a sense of foreboding as you reach the end of the book. I think it took me a while to finish reading it for this reason; I was torn between wanting to find out what happens and wanting to delay the inevitable. The characters were all so real, loveable and imperfect at the same time. Definitely a heart-rending book.
