What Members Thought

Great Expectations is used as an expression throughout the novel and it grows increasingly ironic each time the phrase appears. As often as Pip’s circumstances are supposed to improve, they seem to spiral further down.

Charles Dickens wrote this in 1861. It is interesting to me that Pip was not leading a happy life until he got a job and was providing for himself. He had unusual opportunities but was unhappy until the story has him working for Herbert and paying his own way. 150 years later we have not concluded that this is a basic need for humans to feel good about themselves.
