I first read this book in the early 90's and while I thought it was interesting, it didn't bring forth many strong feelings. It seemed like an impossibility that such a society could exist. Rereading The Handmaid's Tale this month was a much deeper experience that brought forth a roller coaster of emotions. I think having watched the Hulu series first helped me understand and visualize the events that took place in this book. The first season followed the book very closely but obviously the TV series was able to give more detailed information since we could see more happening beyond “Offred’s” point of view.

I was only in the fifth grade when this book was first published, so I missed the frenzy this book caused when it first hit the shelves. Fast forward 32 Years later, this book shook me to my very bones. I can now understand the hype that has been re-awoken in consideration of feminine issues that have recently surfaced in politics. . I am on the fence as to whether or not I will watch the series. The ending was a little non-gratifying and I doubt that series would do any better.

I was torn on how to rate this. I think this is an important book, and one that everyone would benefit from having the chance to read. I can understand the acclaim. That said, I'm not a huge fan of dystopian fiction, so I do not see myself reading it again. Any rating represents my personal tastes far more than the book itself. ...more
