What Members Thought

This book will make you think. In 2011 I would never believe that women would be willing to give up their rights, but after the 2012 election I saw how this could happen. This made the book all the more frightening. I didn't care for the style of the writing, but I understand why Ms. Atwood choose to write it in this style after reading the conclusion. For the purposes of The Handmaid's Tale it worked. From the reviews I read people either loved this book or hated it. I am one the few that fall

I first read this book in the early 90's and while I thought it was interesting, it didn't bring forth many strong feelings. It seemed like an impossibility that such a society could exist. I'm being generous to give it 2 stars. I will never read this again and I won't recommend it to anyone. It reminds me of Fahrenheit 451 - futuristic, far fetched, a warning to us all if we don't change our ways....

I want to give it a 3.5. Ok story and fast read but I found it a little hard to follow the back flashes to present. A couple of time I need to go back and read again. I really didn't understand her relationship with her mother either. I have been holding off watching the series or older movie versions until after I have read the book. Now I can. I will go ahead and read the next book at some point as i do want to see what the ending follows up to. I am also in reading a couple of her other books

I was torn on how to rate this. I think this is an important book, and one that everyone would benefit from having the chance to read. I can understand the acclaim. That said, I'm not a huge fan of dystopian fiction, so I do not see myself reading it again. Any rating represents my personal tastes far more than the book itself.
