A family is murdered by the man Jack while a baby escapes his grasps and crawls his way to the graveyard. The man Jack, of course, is turned away from the graveyard when he smells his way there, and the baby is raised by Mr. and Mrs. Owens and is named Nobody (Bod). Truly enchanting, no enchanting is too sweet, captivating is more accurate. This story is fantastically typical Gaiman. I'm going to encourage my boys to read it. I love the way he weaves the details of the characters so you get to know them without him introducing you directly. His talent with words is so evident when you read you hear, feel and smell the places. I would love to see this book made into a screen version. Great read ...more

Fairly dark beginning for a juvenile book. I never quite empathized with the main character.

I love the fact that Neil Gaiman respects a child's ability to cope with topics like death, fear, and loss. This is a wonderful book and will delight its reader. It definitely deserved the Newbery Award it was given. [side note: I listened to the audio book and Gaiman did a fabulous job. Even if you've already read the book, I would suggest listening to it.] ...more

I had higher expectations for this book. It started out creepy and it grabbed my interest quickly but then it just got confusing and weird. The story didn't flow for easy reading and it lost my interest just as quickly. The ending did get better but I still found it an odd story. I also didn't care for the never-ending chapters! ...more
