I liked Whitehead's writing style, but I did not care for this novel in particular. At a certain point I just couldn't like Benji. There were certain actions that he did that he could not explain why he did them. I chalked that up to being a jerk rather than a sympathetic character. I also did not care for the foreshadowing without giving the read a conclusion to it. I didn't care enough about the side characters to continue thinking about who was he talking about. August 2024 Re-read Underground Railroad and Nickel Boys get all the love (deservedly), but don't sleep on Sag Harbor. It's a lovely and funny slice-of-life coming-of-age story, depicting one summer on Sag Harbor through the eyes of teenager Benji. We get ruminations on hip-hop, ice cream shops, insults, family legacies and ups and downs. A joy to read. ...more
