I will definitely be hand-selling this book to customers at my library.
So many ways to relate to the story, and the characters are so memorable!
I started reading this the same day I heard about it, I stayed up all night reading it, and I still can't stop thinking about it. For a story told through flashbacks to the late 1930s and early 1940s, it's tied perfectly to today. A historical romance, a contemporary romance, women's fiction and civil rights and women's rights all tied up in an emotion

This is one of the first truly amazing books I've read in a long time. The story centers around two women, Dorrie and Isabella, and weaves back and forth between the present day, and the late 1930's to early 1940's. So many social issues are addressed, interracial dating, single parenting, racism, classism, etc but none in a heavy handed way that would have bogged down the story. The author manages to tell the story and yet allow the reader to form their own opinions and idea. I found the story ...more

Star crossed lovers have been the subject of compelling stories since at least the time of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This contemporary version does not fail to disappoint as it captures the pathos of two young lovers who try against enormous odds to make a life together. It also contains some light moments, particularly at the beginning of the book when I found myself laughing out loud at some of the observations Dorrie, a seasoned hairdresser makes. Dorrie has a special client named Isabe ...more

Calling Me Home is surprisingly enjoyable. Surprising because, let's be honest, white women trying to write a feel-good story about the black experience has not only become cliché, but is and has always been a dangerous path to take. Through their stories, an evident ignorance or disregard for black culture is often found, and I can't help but wonder of the authors' motivations. Calling Me Home is surprising because, though it starts on a path very familiar, the journey takes a turn, goes in a c ...more

I had reached a point were it has been hard to bring myself to read. I started this book early in May but could not get past the first few pages...Then last night I found myself wanting to read and opened this book and was soon lost in the late 1930's and eary 1940's and as I finally closed the book in the early hours this morning I was more than fully satisfied (but very emotionaly drained). According to the books dust cover this is Kibler's debut and I believe we will be hearing much more from ...more

I found this book easy to get into and found the past to be as interesting as the present. It is the journey of two women that have known and liked each other for a decade, but never really knew each other until Miss Isabelle needed a favor. Goes to show how some people are meant to be in our lives. It is a story of love and heartbreak. Also a story of our not too distant past, and maybe things have not progressed as much as we would have hoped.
