Listening to Mattie brought to life by the skilled narrator of this audio (Donna Tartt) was an absolute delight. Her adventures played out like a movie in my head as she went on her quest for vengeance against the man who had killed her father. As a bonus, the CD has an essay by the narrator where she talks about her love for the book and her thoughts about its place in American literature. I agree that it should be treated as the classic that it is, I have read few stories that draw the reader

This is the Big Read selection to the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library for February 2015. I would say that I"m not someone that would typically read a "western" but I did enjoy the Wagon's West series by Dana Fuller Ross. I have seen the Jeff Bridges version of this movie, but it was long enough ago that I didn't remember much about it. Coming of age is used so muich for book which a younger character, and Mattie never really changes throughout the book. However, this is looking back on a mo

We find out at the end of the book that she's remained that way throughout her life. She never marries and makes h ...more

Actually I listened to the last part on audio and I think I would have enjoyed this far more had I listened to it from beginning to end. The last part was by far my favorite! If it wasn't for that I would rate this 2 stars.

I have never read a Western before, and this book is this year's Big Read choice, so I thought I would add it to my list. It helped that it was being told from a 14-year-old girl's perspective. I don't really know how to describe this book. It was a quick read, and it fit into another category of the reading challenge I'm doing. I borrowed the (2010) movie from the library, and I will see how it compares to the book. There are also three different book discussions I will be attending for this bo
